    You have a couple …
You have a couple of choices. You can either install in another PC, and it depends on if you have IDE or SATA hard drive. You can perhaps use SATA to USB adapter. You can also try a universal boot cd and USB drive to recover data.

This is presuming that it is just Windows that is dead and NOT the hard drive itself.

    The jumper is that …
The jumper is that grey piece of plastic over the two pins on the far right of the drive.

This type of drive will only connect to a desktop computer that uses IDE (NOT SATA) hard drives – or at least has an IDE cable. An IDE cable looks like a ribbon (grey in the video)

  23. How does one …
How does one configure the drive as a slave and what is a jumper? And how do I connect the drive to my desktop?

    No they don’t. They …
No they don’t. They just have to recognize the file system. Windows 2000, XP & Vista usually use NTFS for the file system. Windows 98 cannot read that. But you shouldn’t have a problem between XP and Vista.

  25. Do the machines …
Do the machines have to have been running the same Operating System? Ie, a Vista Laptop drive onto an XP desktop?
