We have all been there ; we’re working on that big thesis for our finals, we are doing the finishing touches on that large project thats guaranteed to get you that promotion, you are making the final edits for that client who’s going to literally hand you a burlap bag with a money symbol-when it occurs. It may be a hard drive crash, a power surge, a quake or a direct slap from God I don’t know-but all your work is gone and you did not back it up. If you haven’t begun to feel that wave of icy shock and apprehension, then you have to prepare-because what will you do when it *does*? I recollect years ago, I was finishing my last project for my 2-D Advertisement class, just a stupid old timey disinformation war poster. It was raining really heavily and the thunder was getting louder, I saved my project under a few separate titles but I would have liked to have a backup-just in case. I put my USB memory card in and did another fast save-literally a second before we had a brown out / power surge.

That 2nd of darkness felt like a cold, numb, scaring century. When the light came back on and my PC began booting up all I could do was pray that my last was there and any damage was not. My final was on my PC, one of the saves anyway. The final was still intact on my USB, but 1/2 the other files were corrupted and that port was fried and has not worked since. The hard drive itself went 2 weeks later , a week after I handed in my project. I got lucky, extremely fortunate. Hopefully if it occurs again I will be as fortunate. But always ‘hoping for the best’ is a very stupid thing to do. That is’s like never wearing a helmet on a bike and hoping you can never get hurt if you hopefully don’t fall-one search on Youtube proves you will get hurt when you fall off a bike. Hilariously though, but still I am sure smashing your face on a concrete path hurts.

Thankfully for those who do enjoy wearing wearing helmets while using our PCs ( or making your PCs clumsily wear one ), there are literally lots of options to be certain our files will be safe and backed up when the time comes. Online backup is great to store your files, but it can be prices and you are restrained by the velocity of your Internet and the size of your data. If you are willing to spend the scratch, it simple and convenient and always a comfort understanding that what ever you want should be available to you at all times-as long as a Net source in close. Which naturally it mostly is, I like living in THE FUTURE.

Still, if you have the art of funny coincidence and karma comes to a decision to say Sup? when you are backing up your info online-your doubly %$+. And potentially extremely wanting a hug to boot.
To avoid that rare catastrophe you can go with the classic methodology of offline information storage, the external hard drive. Prices start for as little as under twenty greenbacks and you should purchase one virtually anywhere, it’s truthfully one of those invests you will be thankful for.

Any PC with USB or Firewire capacity will see the external hard drive as a storage machine and assign it a letter to designate it. Anytime you plug it in, you fundamentally just treat it like any standard drive. You drag and drop what you need, it’s super easy to transfer enormous files backwards and forwards from work to home, to a friend’s house, or between your desktop and portable. It’s especially beneficial if you have a tendency to keep large amounts of photographs, music, movie, or game files on your PC too. Just treat your external like your attic room, toss everything in there that you do not actually use or need-but your hoarder instinct is too dynamic to just delete them. This way you get to fulfill your compulsion, your computer runs faster, and you suddenly have extra space to hoard more data! Or you can actually use if for vital stuff like I mentioned earlier, so that in an emergency your information will remain safe. But I understand if that doesn’t slake your desire to having floor to ceiling hard drives for your LOLcat addiction .

I work at Geek Choice, a nationwide computer repair company. We can help you with: Linksys Setup, Virus Removal, Spyware Removal, Computer startup problems, Printer not printing, Internet Connection Problems, and much more.

One of the most overlooked facets of the company information technology structure is an appropriate backup and disaster recovery system. If your company does not have an adequate backup system, you are putting your digital assets at great risk. There are affordable backup and data recovery systems in every price range, so even companies with limited budgets can afford an elementary system at the very least. Also many computer services firms now offer backup and data recovery systems as integral parts of their managed IT services.

Some things to consider when thinking about your backup and disaster recovery solution(s):

1. What happens if I delete a file?
2. Where is my email stored and is it backed up?
3. What if my computer crashes? Even if my data is saved how long will it take me to rebuild my computer to a functioning state?
4. Is my data all located in the same physical space?
5. Will a catastrophe wipe out my backup solution i.e. an earthquake?
6. Does my business count on any one system for important functions? How long can my business operate without a functioning system? Does my current backup solution accomodate that expectation?
7. Does anyone I work with know how to recover information if I need to use my backups that are in place?
8. Are my backups tested so I know they work?
9. Are my backups monitored so I know if they are ever failing?
10. Is the backup data media (i.e. hard drives or tapes) transferred in a secure, controlled manor since it contains all data for my entire business?

These questions covers about 1/4 of the questions that one should review when it comes to a practical backup and disaster recovery solution so if you haven’t asked yourself these questions, start today! If you are overwhelmed, contact a local computer services provider which should be able to assist your company.

hard drive data recovery

Here are the 3 basic types of hard drive “crashes” and how to recover data in these scenarios.:

1) File structure is incorrect (usually caused by improper shutdown or disconnecting the drive while it is being written to. Usual fix involves running a scandisk or chkdsk. Scan can take a few hours at most depending on the settings.

2) Unreadable data caused by bits being de-magnetized. Can be resolved by running programs which “re-magnetize” the bits. This is common on laptops that get jarred or dropped mildly. Bad sectors that aren’t physically damaged can be recovered. Software used: HDD Regenerator or SpinRite. Scans can take days.

3) Hardware failure. Sometimes the disk/platter gets scratched, the arm stops working (head crash), or the on-board chip gets fried. All of these repairs require a specialty recovery service. Anytime the hard drive needs to be opened, a clean room (dust-free room) is required. Time to recover data depends on the company. Turn around times is a few weeks.

I would recommend Gillware data recovery. They have very good customer service, always pick up the phone, and quick to respond.
They get the job done and don’t charge unless they recover the data you want. They are also the least expensive service that I’ve found on the internet. See for yourself.

Check out their website: http://www.gillware.com.

Give them my affiliate code (12054) if you want the following benefits:

-Free diagnostics
-Up to 5 free DVDs or CDs
-And free UPS Ground shipping (a $50 value)
